RSY Grave 51. The grave lay on the slope of the Areopagus in Roman house O, just east of the line where the hillside is scarped for the foundation of the west wall of the house. Cutting:the pit cut in ... Archaic period/6th or 7th c ... Skeleton: On the bottom of the pithos were found the skull and some of the leg-bones of a small child who had seemingly been buried in a doubled-up position with the head toward the mouth of the pithos (south).

It was discovered about 20m to the west of Pier 15 of the Stoa of Attalos and almost in a line and a few meters south of Tomb XX. although the entire upper part ... Myc. II-IIIA/B ... One lay along the east side with head to south and legs doubled up; another in the center with feet toward the door; and a third at the back of the chamber.

JP Unlined roughly rectangular ... LH III/EPG (date uncertain) ... JP Unlined roughly rectangular pit cut into bedrock, measuring 1.71m long and 0.50m wide. the modern surface of what was known in the early 1930s as Plateia Theseiou sloped down toward the west; the bottom of the tomb at the east end was at a depth of 0.31m from the surface, and only 0.17m at the west end. the tomb was oriented east-west, with the head of the deceased toward the west. the skeleton, in part disturbed, was found on its back, arms by the side of the body.

Little ash and carbon in the filling, but the grave offerings were unburned. JP ... Developed Protogeometric ... This suggested that the deceased was probably oriented with the head to the west. No trace of formal tomb covering. 3 distinct strata of the fill: a) Upper half, to a depth of 0.40m, redeposited bedrock chips mixed with earth.

Household: Unglazed; double-yoked handle for large amphora ("cow's head handle"); amphora; utility amphoras; storage amphoras; kados; spouted kados; cooking ware; cooking jug; cooking stand; brazier; cooking ware basin; oinochoe; hydriai; bowl, deep spouted; lekane; large basin; coarse ware basin; pithos; incised coarse ware.

Initially uncovered with a diameter of c. 1.05m. Its south side extends under the south wall of the Classical structure and so clearly predates it. The highest preserved portion of the well shaft (at the ... 22 July-9 August 1994 26 June 1995 3-7 July 1995 ... There is no well head, but a small portion of light clay bordering the preserved top of the shaft on the east side might indicate the contemporary ground level.

The later phase of the well, a Byzantine well-lining and well-head, was excavated during the 2001 season (BZ XXV p. 4953, Lot BZ 1217) and the Roman catchment basin and well-lining down to the level of the terracotta lining were excavated during the 2002 season (BZ XXVII pp. 5279 & 5285 for the catchment basin; BZ XXVII p. 5293 for the Roman well-lining).
