Fills from construction and reconstruction of a house. "Brown House" = House A (RSY Hesp. 20) (and pit under Layer 4) in the industrial area west of the Areopagus.
Under the original floor of this house ... Second half of the 5th. c. B.C ... The filling of the floor levels of the house after its plan was changed and it was reconstructed yielded fragments of various coarse amphoras and black glazed table ware; four sherds incised with the letter kappa suggest that this is the initial of the owner of the house of the second period.

The scanty use filling at the bottom contained water jars and pitchers as well as the inventoried objects; ... Second quarter of 6th. c. B.C ... The dumped filling, mixed with the broken bedrock above a depth of 2.40m., appears to be of the same date as the use filling, and yielded most of the inventoried objects - black figured and black glazed, as well as coarse ware, lamps, figurines, and loom weights; to be especially noted are a child's commode (P 18010, Hesp. 17 (1948), pp. 154-155), and an inscribed well head (P 18276, Hesp. 18 (1949), p. 125, no. 7). |

Well is ca. 1.20m in diameter, dug into bedrock. Excavated to depth of roughly -8.00m; sides started collapsing and thus did not dig to full depth. Some stone-lining, ... POU, for depth of ca. 4.80m, includes many whole or nearly whole coarse water jugs (many still in tins), a little glazed pottery, including lamp fragments and much coarse ware of the 13th century A.D. ... B.C. dug for depth of ca. -2.60m. Some black glazed, much coarse ware, and some fragments of water pipes (still in tins). |
| A cave-in not long after the digging of this shaft destroyed its possible usefulness as a well and thereafter it was used as a dump. Two principle periods of such use were noted, and within these several ... Ca. 575-480 B.C ... This was sorted all together, and regrouped by "Kind', lettered under these numbers, as follows (6 tins).

Diameter 1m. There were no traces of hand holes in its walls. At 5.2m depth below datum on the S-E side of the shaft, a small underground stream emptied into the well. The stratigraphy ... Fine ware:quantities similar to black glaze catalogued pieces; panathenaic amphorae, two lower body fragments; lekanis, one fragment with..pattern on exterior of rim; black glaze oinochoe fragments; fragments of a black glaze psykter; fragments of striped lekanai. Very little intrusive material; earlier: Neolithic, EC, EH, Minyan, Matt painted, LH II/IIIA; later: black glazed, Hellenistic.
