Wall fragment. Two chips on outside; two scratches along temple of Dionysos. Max. dim. 0.058.
Dionysos (most of wreathed head) to left. At the far left there is a bit of contour outline, perhaps the top ... Ca. 430-420 B.C ... Perhaps by the same hand as Tübingen 5512 (CVA, Tübingen 4 [Deutschland 52], pl. 28 [2545]:5), attributed by Böhr (p. 64) to the Kleophon Painter. |
Intact except for chip in rim. H. 0.009; diam. 0.07. M. Lang, Graffiti in the Athenian Agora (Agora Picture Book 14), Princeton 1988, p. 16. fig. 44 (detail).
Filleted male head to left. Relief contour ... Third quarter of the 5th century B.C ... For a head on the top side of such a lid, see Vienna 3718 (CVA, Vienna 1 [Österreich 1], pl. 48 [48]:3); three in Tübingen: S./10 1731, S./10 1395, and 5610 (all illustrated: CVA, Tübingen 4 [Deutschland 52], pl. 44 [2561]:4, 5, 8); Oxford 334 (CVA, Oxford 1 [Great Britain 3], pl. 4 [96]:6); Louvre CA 960 (frontal head of youth). |
Wall fragment. Max. dim. 0.032. Matheson, Polygnotos, p. 418, cat. no. KL 64.
Warrior (most of head with pilos and left shoulder) to left, the shaft of a spear belonging to his opponent crossing his face ... Ca. 440-430 B.C ... For the white pilos, there is a good parallel on Tübingen S/10 1568 i = E 162, a fragmentary loutrophoros by the Kleophon Painter (ARV2 1147, 55; Addenda 335; Matheson, p. 418, cat. no. ... Böhr (CVA, Tübingen 4 [Deutschland 52], p. 27) suggests that the use of white indicates a pilos made of bronze, the white presumably indicating the gleaming surface. This is an attractive idea but may not be correct, since a young rider on another loutrophoros fragment in Tübingen wears a white petasos, a hat that surely was not made of metal (S/10 1649 = E 168: CVA, pl. 7 [2524]:5).

Neck fragment with two rings between figures and ornament below. Glaze pitted and abraded in places. P.H. 0.125.
Two women (lower drapery, feet of each) facing, each wearing a chiton, the left holding ... Ca. 420 B.C ... For the combination of palmettes on one side of the neck and inverted rays on the other, see Vienna 2027 by the Washing Painter (ARV2 1127, 11; Addenda 332) and Tübingen S./10 1543 (CVA, Tübingen 4 [Deutschland 52], pl. 5 [2522]:4--6) attributed by Böhr (CVA, pp. 22--23) to the Painter of Louvre MN 558. 88 is contemporary with these but seems to be by another hand. |
Shoulder fragment with thin, brown wash on inside near bottom. Max. dim. 0.043. Choes and Anthesteria, p. 80, cat. no. 170, fig. 287.
Youth (filleted head, much of torso, start of left arm, right hand) ... Ca. 425-400 B.C ...
