Excavated in 1925, the Roman villa at Corinth is famous for its well-preserved mosaics, showing goat herdsmen and other pastoral themes. Of rectangular design, they are curtailed or supplemented to fit into irregularly-shaped rooms, leading to the author's suggestion that these were Late Hellenistic creations reused in a Roman context. The book is notable for its large size and portfolio format, with large-scale color plates following loose-leaf text pages. |

Careful description of all the remains, both those in situ and reused blocks, forms the basis of the reconstruction of this extensive two-story building of the third quarter of the 4th century B.C. which stretched the full length of the south side of the Corinthian Agora and, more than any other single building, established the size and shape of the center of the Hellenistic and Roman city. One of the largest secular buildings in Greece, the South Stoa appears to have been planned as a kind of hotel to accommodate visitors at a time when Corinth served as the capital of a briefly united Greek world. After the destruction of the city, it remained comparatively undamaged and was taken over by the Roman Colony as the seat of its administrative offices. |

The inscriptions found in the excavations at Corinth between 1926 and 1950 are published here which, although fragmentary, provide significant new evidence for the history of Greece in the Roman period. Here the Greek texts before 44 B.C. number only 49; the bulk of the volume deals with 451 texts, both Greek and Latin, of the Roman Imperial period, 220 Greek texts of the Late Roman and Early Byzantine period and 17 after A.D. 800. Text, translation, and commentary are offered for each inscription and a general introduction to each period summarizes the historical information yielded by the texts and includes lists of the names of those who held various Roman offices. |

Since the area of the Lower Agora had not yet been dug to the Greek level, this volume is concerned with the buildings and topography of the Roman period: temples on the West Terrace; shops, circular monument, Dionysion, and Bema on the central terrace; and isolated monuments in the open Agora. Both the Greek Painted Building and the North Stoa and the Roman Market north of the Archaic Temple are treated. Two of the pieces found are Mycenaean but most belong to the Roman period, reflecting the extent of the devastation of the Greek city wrought by the Roman general Mummius. Although few of the pieces in the volume are of high artistic merit, the range of pieces illustrated gives a good impression of the repertoire of sculpture to be found in a provincial Greek town in Roman times. Imperial and honorary statues are more numerous than those of gods, among whom Apollo and the Muses, Aphrodite, Dionysos and his thiasos, and Cybele play a prominent part. |
