Fills from construction and reconstruction of a house. "Brown House" = House A (RSY Hesp. 20) (and pit under Layer 4) in the industrial area west of the Areopagus.

Under the original floor of this house were sherds including two red figured pieces (P 17137, P 19880). The filling of the floor levels of the house after its plan was changed and it was reconstructed yielded fragments of various coarse amphoras and black glazed table ware; four sherds incised with the letter kappa suggest that this is the initial of the owner of the house of the second period.

Layer 4 ran over the foundation of the wall between rooms 5 and 6; a layer of decayed mudbrick covered layer 4. The pyre seems to have been dug into layer 4, which was then patched and continued in use. A new floor was not laid, however, so the pyre may have been buried between the abandonment of the house and its collapse. |

The stratigraphy above it was disturbed, and the pit may have been dug from a higher level. The hard red earth under the pyre indicates that it was burnt in situ, but a few centimeters of earth between the floor of the pit and the vessels suggests vessels were cleaned out and then thrown back in. |

Although carefully constructed this shaft seems never to have served as a well but only as a rubbish dump for neighboring establishments.

Mouth was discovered in 1950 (p. 2273). Between first and second POU; no joins between the groups, which were separated by nearly sterile fill. No apparent chronological difference ... Mid-2nd c. B.C ... In the lowest fifty centimeters the fill was of reddish mud,, containing a quantity of household utensils, fragments of metal, wood and bone, and even a hazel-nut and some shells. This filling probably belongs to a time before the building of Stoa, when the well served some nearby house or shop. ... Above this filling, to the top of the tiles, the well contained broken bedrock, along with a few chips and pebbles, topped by a layer 50 cm deep of hard-packed dark blue clay, forming a lid, as it were, over the lower, tiled part of the well. |

Objects P 9255-P 9258, P 21333, SS 11145 are from the lower filling, but from immediately below the later drains and belong to their context.

Therefore, it appears that this cistern had several periods of use: Hellenistic (at least one phase contemporary with the 2nd century B.C, phase of House E to the north), Late Roman (probably associated with the amphora and perhaps also maybe the platform and the drain), and finally Byzantine.
