Title:   Hand of Figurine
Category:   Terracotta
Description:   Single fragment preserving entire hand and wrist save for the fingertips.
Fasciaed, relief beaded garment preserved only on backside of wrist. Garment is mostly red, except at the cuff where there is a reserved band followed by a black band at the extreme edge. The inside of the wrist is roughly broken away, marking the fragment's point of attachment to the original sculpture. It appears that the hand and wrist were made separately and that the garment remains enveloping the wrist acted in part to secure the piece to the body of the sculpture. The areas of flesh carry a very high polish. The fragment is left hand of an akroterion (inv. T 4025) excavated from within the crossroads enclosure in 1972. The hand joins at the left hip of the rider figure. The hands makes a fist with the thumb resting on top of the index finger and probably held a rein, which would have been inserted separately into the hole made between the fingers and the palm. The hand is about 1/3 life-size.
Buff fabric with fine black inclusions.
